Ocean Mother Opening Celebration
13 April 2024
1pm - 4.30pm
Free
Join artist Saroj Patel on Saturday 13 April from 1 to 4:30pm to celebrate the opening of her exhibition Ocean Mother.
At 2:30pm, the artist’s mother, Sushila Patel, will perform a song she wrote in response to the exhibition installation ‘Ocean of Emotions.’ She will be singing her song and playing the tabla (drum).
Following the performance, there will be a panel discussion featuring the artist and some of the mothers who Saroj interviewed for her research for the ‘Ocean of Emotions’ installation. The panel will explore how histories, traditions, and culture have shaped their identities and influenced their experiences of motherhood.
About the exhibition
Ocean Mother unveils the untold stories and rich experiences of South Asian mothers. These remarkable women break boundaries and craft new narratives for South Asian women. The enduring power of their maternal stories resonate across generations, weaving into the fabric of our shared human experience.
About the artist
Saroj Patel’s work explores the contrasting and sometimes conflicting identities of a British Indian artist. Her sculptures are a celebration of Indian culture and community. They are also a way for the artist to address her own relationship with her upbringing.
This exhibition is part of our 2023-2024 Emerging Artists Programme. The open call for the 2024-2025 Emerging Artist Programme will be announced on our Artist Opportunities page.
